November 2008 3 Awards in the 1 Night!

We would like to extend congratulations to our Students who received CIBSE sponsored awards at the University of Ulster presentation night on Monday 10th November 2008. The awards are in recognition of achievement and were presented to:

Seamus McKillop with the Award winning students• Conor Casey, part time Student of the Year. Conor has recently attained his B.Eng (Hons) with support from the Company and hard work! Conor has been working with Semple and McKillop for nearly 5 years.

• Clodagh Farrell received 2nd Year Student of the Year Award. Clodagh is currently on placement year from the University of Ulster and is based in the Castleblayney office.

• Stephen Kernaghan picked up Placement Student of the Year Award. Stephen completed his placement year in Semple & McKillop Ltd in the 07/08 year and is now completing his final year at the University.

Semple & McKillop Ltd enjoy close working partnerships with Queens University Belfast and the University of Ulster. In addition to joint research projects, the Company provides work experience placements for students. These are of mutual benefit and provide the Company with access to high calibre engineers.

November 2008 Conor Casey: The Niall Mellon Building Blitz 2008

In November, our member of staff, Conor Casey, participated in the Niall Mellon Township Trust 2008 'Building Blitz' which took place over one week in the impoverished township of Khayelitsha, on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa.

Some of the houses completed over the week.Construction of a new home underway.Conor was part of a contingent of over 2000 volunteers from all corners of Ireland and over the week, 253 new houses were completed.

We are proud to have supported the Niall Mellon Township Trust initiative for 2008.

October 2008 Environmental Award for Semple & McKillop

Semple McKillop Ltd scooped up the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Belfast award at a ceremony held in Malone House 'in recognition of significant contribution towards environmental awareness and best practice'.

The Environmental Contribution Award is one of the Civic and Community Contribution Awards made by JCI Chamber each year. It is presented to individuals or organisations that have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment and made a significant contribution to or show leadership in environmental issues.

Speaking after the ceremony, Seamus McKillop, Director said: “Within Semple & McKillop Ltd we are all extremely committed to protecting the natural environment. Staff have embraced our environmental policy and work with clients to incorporate innovative and environmentally sustainable solutions. I'm delighted to accept this award on behalf of all at Semple & McKillop Ltd in recognition of how we continue to improve our environmental performance and minimise the effects of our activities”

May 2008 Continual Development: Impact of Legislation

Due to the increased number of projects within the education and health care sectors, Semple & McKillop Ltd have reviewed their practice regarding the legislation on the 'Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults'.

Seamus McKillop, Company Director Dr Barbara McIllwrath, Belfast Metropolitan College and Gillian Drennan revising the Company policy following the information session with staff. Dr McIlwrath, Belfast Metropolitan College met with staff and provided an informative overview of the legislation. She then worked through a number of scenarios with staff that helped explore how the legislation affects the delivery of services. Staff were provided with the necessary guidance and information to ensure we continue to provide services to the highest standard based and based on best practice.

This session was provided by Belfast Metropolitan College as part of an overall programme.
