Semple & McKillop were commissioned by the SHSCT to devise and implement a strategy to provide a robust, economical and energy efficient heating solution for the Daisy Hill Hospital site. The measured results are reduced total site heating costs by 50% and carbon dioxide emissions by 60%. Further and additional savings shall be realised as a consequence of the installation of a Combined Heat and Power Plant within the new Energy Centre.

Semple & McKillop have significant experience in large scale energy reduction projects in the health, education and the private sectors. Their work with the Southern Health & Social Care Trust also received recognition in 2009 with St Luke’s Hospital site project receiving the ‘Leading Energy Efficiency Project Award'

September 2012 Designing Services for Innovative Healthcare Systems

Semple & McKillop have successfully handed over a new High Dependency Unit at Daisy Hill Hospital. This is one of the latest commissions for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust that Semple & McKillop have been appointed as Mechanical and Electrical Consulting Engineers.

The facility, which was officially opened by Mr Poots, Health Minister, is the first in the UK to use a robot which allows intensive care specialists from one hospital to remotely assess patients in another. The use of new technology, in the form of the telepresence robot, is at the cutting edge of innovation in our health service.

This extensive and comprehensive refurbishment includes 10 beds which shall be used for treating the most acutely ill patients. Services designed included medical gas services, vacuum systems, modification of existing ventilation system and the design of a turnkey renal dialysis installation including reverse osmosis unit. A specialist backup uninterruptable power supply unit was designed and installed with medical services innovatively cased within a specialised vertical trunking systems.

August 2012 Attracting Young Capable Engineers

Semple & McKillop are delighted to welcome two students on our 2012-2013 Student Placement Programme, Jordan Glasgow and Christopher McAnearney. Both Jordan and Christopher are studying BEng (Hons) Energy and Building Services Engineering at the University of Ulster and join the Teams at the Belfast and Monaghan offices.

We also extend our thanks to Richard Tsang, a competent young engineer, who returns to complete his MEng in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ulster.

February 2012 Leading in R&D

Semple & McKillop are delighted to be are part of a Europe wide research and development consortia.

Semple & McKillop are delighted to be are part of a Europe wide research and development consortia into energy efficient lighting. This latest development is part of our strategy to position ourselves as leaders in innovative design and technology applications.

Seamus McKillop, Managing Director and Terence Close, Senior Associate have attended meetings in Brussels and Rome with their European partners. Organisations involved include TOM, a spin-off company from Queen’s University, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust with European partners from Italy, Belgium, Greece and Romania.

The purpose of the research project, EDISON, is to demonstrate that a DC powered smart lighting system can improve energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and encourage the use of small-scale renewable energy sources in European public buildings such as schools, museums, administrative offices and hospitals.

Our role over the next 2 years will be to set up the pilot projects in test locations and to manage and monitor the findings resultant from the pilot tests. The partners will review outcomes during the pilot studies and refine the tests to create the maximum opportunity for energy savings and shared learning. The final stage of the project will involve detailed evaluation of the project outcomes with all European partners and the possible development of a commercial platform which can be implemented at scale, across public sector buildings to generate significant energy reductions on light usage.
