December 2016 Handover of Government BIM Pilot Scheme...

Semple & McKillop have this month handed over one of the first government BIM pilot schemes managed by the Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP). The new office headquarters building for DARD Rivers Agency Loughry was successfully completed to Level 2 BIM, LOD 6.

Semple & McKillop were responsible for the mechanical, electrical and sustainable design services. This high performance build has been designed to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and incorporates rainwater harvesting and a PV Array. This modern two-storey 950m2 building provides a spacious and attractive work environment with over 85 workstations.

With construction underway on the €15M Grade A office space in Hogan Place, Dublin, Semple & McKillop have further added to their commercial portfolio with the recent award of a new headquarters building for Woodside Haulage, Ballynure and the refurbishment and fit out of offices for KPMG in Belfast.


October 2016 Award at Global BIM Design Competition...

Congratulations to John Hughes who was a member of the winning team on a 48 hour BIM Build Earth Live Design Competition.

In just under 48 hours, John and his team members had to imagine and design the world’s first Hyperloop system to connect Dubai and Fujairah City for seamless passenger and freight transport. In this tight timeframe they produced a 4D model and set of construction drawings for three Hyperloop terminals and the track infrastructure and route between the three terminals.

From 62 teams in the competition, 6 finalists were flown to Dubai. Following a presentation to a judging panel the Team were awarded ‘Best Use of BIM for Sustainability’ sponsored by Hyperloop. The winners of these awards are recognised as ‘leaders in their field and masters of collaborative technologies’.

The local Team, BIM Fusion was made up of Semple & McKillop, Graham Construction, Ostick & Williams and Ulster University.



June 2016 Construction works begin on the new £14M Film Studio...


The tender process to select the main contractor for this 140,000sq ft development is complete and O'Hare & McGovern Ltd have started works on site.

The North Foreshore Film Studios are being built on a 340-acre former landfill site adjacent to Belfast Lough. This new purpose built development will feature a 66,000sq ft film studio and sound stage, along with 2 No 23,000sq ft workshops and 32,000sq ft production space. Semple & McKillop have been appointed by Belfast Harbour Commissioners and are responsible for the mechanical, electrical and sustainable design services and specialist services design necessary to accommodate the full spectrum of film production needs for this large scale development.

The project is due for completion by the end of 2016.

In 2012 Semple & McKillop completed the Paint Hall Film Studio in Titanic Quarter which is best known for its home to the filming of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Semple & McKillop were delighted to attend the official opening of the new Witness History Visitor Centre at the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin.

Semple & McKillop were appointed by An Post to provide Mechanical and Electrical Consulting services for the restoration, development and specialist fit out of this new multi-media exhibition and Visitor Centre. Our Team were also responsible for the close liaison and development of the services design with the specialist fit-out team. The exhibition area is integrated within the footprint of the GPO’s main post office hall and includes an auditorium.

The GPO is the headquarters of the Irish Post Office, An Post, and Dublin's principal post office and is one of Ireland's most famous buildings. The GPO is remarkable for the place it holds in Irish history, its notable architecture and also that it continues successfully to fulfil its original purpose as the headquarters of the Irish Post Office.

March 2016 Semple & McKillop’s Young Engineers continue to excel...


Semple & McKillop extend their congratulations to our Graduate Engineer, Jordan Glasgow on his most recent accolade, the 'McBride Prize' Student Award from the Energy Institute. This award is in recognition for the best dissertation submitted to an Energy Institute accredited course.

Jordan's exceptional talent as a young engineer was also recognised by his receipt of the MEng Final Year Student Award, the CIBSE NI Student sponsored awards.

Jordan joined Semple & McKillop this year on graduating from Ulster University with a 1st in MEng in Energy & Building Services Engineering and having previously completed Semple & McKillop’s Student Placement Programme.

Stuart: ‘With just over 6 months completed I have developed information modelling skills and an understanding of building services working on a £12M project at Queen’s University. I have been responsible for the development of construction drawings in 3DRevit for full MEP services to include coordination and clash detection. The support in the office is really great.'

The project is currently at tender stage and due for completion by October 2016.
