Design Complete on Landmark GPO Building
Semple & McKillop are the appointed M&E consultants at the GPO Building, the headquarters of the Irish postal service, on O’Connell Street, Dublin. The design stage is now complete on this new build and refurbishment.
The new facility shall be constructed in the existing east courtyard behind the public post office area and features a new multi-media exhibition experience and an external landscaped gallery area.
When opened, public access will be extended to the GPO’s impressive inner courtyard for the first time.
Our M&E services design strategy has ensured the new services are integrated within the GPO restricted building envelope. It has also been important to conceal and integrate services discreetly to protect the build integrity and ornate features of one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks.
Designed by leading architect Francis Johnston, the GPO was completed as a headquarters for the Irish Post Office in 1818. The GPO will continue to operate as An Post’s headquarters as well as the country’s flagship post office. Construction works commenced late summer 2014 with project completion due February 2016.
